Alcohol and tobacco are the two great military drugs. During World War II the U.S. Army provided cigarettes in K-rations, but discouraged hard liquor among troops on duty. What happened unofficially was another matter. The 31st Infantry Division, a mostly southern outfit, included veteran moonshiners, some of whom appear here on Morotai Island. An enlisted man in a quartermaster company gave them sugar in exchange for a share of the liquor. They sold the rest to GIs or drank it themselves. A first sergeant, acting on orders, eventually destroyed their still. He did so with reluctance, as he was one of their customers.
